Pull-Through Mobility Court

A pull-through mobility court is a mobility court laid out so every vehicle enters, loads and leaves moving forward, so no vehicle ever has to reverse.

How it works

  • Curbed bays are angled toward the building. Each car pulls in nose first from a one-way entry lane.
  • The rider walks out along a pedestrian platform and gets in at the curb, or steps out and walks in.
  • The car continues forward through a marked crossing in the platform to an exit lane, then back to the street.
  • People and cars cross only at marked points, at walking pace, and never with a car backing up.

Why it matters

  • U.S. rules (FMVSS 141) require electric vehicles to make a sound in reverse and when moving forward at low speed. A pull-through layout removes the backup alert, though the low-speed forward sound remains while a car moves. A car parked and charging makes no required sound.
  • Because nothing reverses, a building can choose to let a few fleet vehicles wait and charge in the court overnight, so cars are ready at the door for the morning.
  • The same layout suits self-parking cars that drop their owners at the court and drive themselves to a stall.
