A robotaxi is a driverless (SAE Level 4) vehicle operating shared rides within a mapped service area. By late 2025 robotaxis were completing more than 700,000 paid rides a week worldwide. In a parking facility:
- Robotaxis are expected to be nearly all electric, traveling 100+ miles a day, creating demand for overnight home bases and daytime waiting zones with charging.
- One robotaxi replaces multiple owned vehicles, reducing parking demand in dense areas while creating fleet-staging demand.
Considerations
- The decisive policy choices are local: curb regulation, zoning, operating agreements, and the price of a parking space. The robotaxi does not eliminate the parking facility; it changes what the facility is for.
