Level 4 Autonomy

Level 4 (L4) autonomy is driverless operation within a programmed or pre-mapped area, known as an operational design domain. It is the technology behind current robotaxis, and it is expected to be operational at scale by 2029.

The levels come from the SAE J3016 standard, which runs from Level 0 (no automation) to Level 5 (driverless anywhere). At Level 4 the vehicle needs no human driver inside its domain; outside that domain it either stops safely or hands control back.

What L4 means for parking

  • L4 private vehicles are expected to perform autonomous parking in garages and on street, more widely available in US models from 2027. See autonomous valet parking.
  • Robotaxi fleets need places to stage, charge and clean vehicles between trips. See robotaxi depot and fleet staging.
  • Demand shifts from long-term storage toward pick-up and drop-off at the curb and at building entrances.
  • Autonomous parking changes stall geometry, circulation and charging utilization assumptions.

Why Level 5 may not matter

L5, driverless anywhere, may never be cost-effective in private cars that sit parked 95% of the time. For parking planning, L4 is the level that changes the building.

The Parkonomics view

Design for L4 arriving in phases, not L5 arriving at once. The facilities that adapt best will be those that planned zones and charging for vehicles that move themselves.
