Type of construction method used in building concrete floors. It consists of a reinforced concrete slab with a grid of deep ribs or waffles formed on the underside. These ribs create a pattern of voids, resulting in a lighter and more efficient structural system.
A waffle slab hollows out a two-way concrete floor into a grid of ribs, leaving a thin top surface carried on deep, criss-crossing beams. The pockets remove dead weight the structure would otherwise carry, letting the same concrete span farther, the reason the underside of many garages looks like a waffle. Illustrative.
