Level of Service (LOS) C in transportation and traffic engineering is a classification used to describe a moderate level of traffic flow with stable conditions, but with more noticeable restrictions compared to LOS A and B.
Characteristics
of LOS C include:
- Stable Flow: Traffic flow remains stable, but maneuverability and speed start to be more noticeably affected by traffic density.
- Moderate Speed and Freedom to Maneuver: Vehicles are still moving at reasonable speeds, but drivers have less freedom to change lanes or pass other vehicles compared to LOS A and B.
- Increased Density: The proximity of vehicles is closer, leading to a more constrained driving environment.
- Acceptable Comfort and Convenience: While comfort and convenience are reduced compared to higher levels of service, LOS C is still generally acceptable for most drivers, especially in urban or densely populated areas.
- Minor Delays: Drivers may start experiencing minor delays, especially during peak travel times, but these delays are not excessive. LOS C is often targeted in urban or suburban areas, where a balance is sought between a high volume of traffic and maintaining a reasonably efficient flow. This level of service is considered acceptable for daily commuting and urban traffic, providing a compromise between high traffic volumes and maintaining reasonable traffic speeds and delays.
