Level of Service (LOS) B

Level of Service (LOS) B in transportation and traffic engineering represents a relatively high quality of traffic flow with slightly more limitations compared to LOS A. Key characteristics of LOS B include:

  • Reasonably Unimpeded Flow: While not completely free-flowing like LOS A, traffic under LOS B moves at or near the speed limit, with only minor delays and disruptions.
  • Moderate Traffic Density: Vehicle density is higher than LOS A, but there is still adequate space for maneuvering and changing lanes with some comfort and ease.
  • Slight Reduction in Speed: Speeds may be slightly reduced from the maximum possible due to the increased density, but overall movement remains relatively unimpeded.
  • Good Operational Comfort and Convenience: Although not as optimal as LOS A, LOS B still provides a comfortable and convenient driving experience with only minimal impacts on travel time and user comfort.
  • Acceptable Level of Service: LOS B is often considered an acceptable level of service in many contexts, particularly in urban or suburban areas during peak hours. In summary, LOS B indicates a high quality of traffic flow with some minor constraints on speed and maneuverability but still maintains efficient and comfortable traffic conditions for users.

LOS in parking design

In parking facility design, LOS B is a generous layout, slightly tighter than A, and a common choice for visitor-oriented facilities where many users are unfamiliar with the garage. See levels of service and parking geometry.
