A port is the sub-system within an EV charger that charges one vehicle. Level 2 chargers commonly carry one or two ports; DCFC devices usually charge one vehicle at a time even when fitted with two connector types. In a parking facility:
- Capacity planning is done in ports, not chargers: a dual-port device at a shared breaker delivers more power to one port when the other is idle.
Considerations
- Port counts, not charger counts, drive code compliance, load calculations, and utilization math. Count ports, not boxes.
