International Green Construction Code (IgCC)

The International Green Construction Code (IgCC) is a model code that sets minimum requirements for sustainable design and construction, covering energy, water, materials, site and indoor environmental quality.

Since the 2018 edition, the IgCC has been developed jointly by the International Code Council, ASHRAE and partners, with its technical content drawn from ASHRAE Standard 189.1. Unlike voluntary rating systems, it is written in code language so that jurisdictions can adopt it, in whole or in part, as an enforceable requirement. Adoption is selective, often for public buildings or as an option.

Where it touches parking

  • Site provisions on heat island mitigation and stormwater. See heat island effect.
  • Parking and transportation provisions, such as preferred spaces, bicycle parking and EV readiness in some editions.
  • Lighting power and controls. See lighting power density.
  • Materials and embodied carbon. See embodied carbon.

The Parkonomics view

For parking structures, voluntary programs such as Parksmart address the building type more directly. Check whether the jurisdiction has adopted any part of the IgCC before assuming green requirements are optional.
