Right-speeding is the practice of setting both the power level (kW per port) and the number of EV charging ports from how the facility is actually used: the miles a typical vehicle needs to recover and the length of the parking stay. In a parking facility:
- An all-day workplace parker recovering 94 miles over 8 hours needs about 3.8 kW, not the default 7.2 kW.
- A multi-day airport parker needs as little as 1.45 kW; a depleted overnight hotel guest genuinely needs 7.2 kW.
- Over-speeding produces cars occupying chargers long after they stop drawing power, inflating the service load and the grid impact.
Considerations
- Right-speeding governs port counts as well as power; excess infrastructure carries capital cost with no return for years. Every charger installation in a parking facility should be designed by right-speeding.
