The Urban Land Institute (ULI) is a nonprofit research and education organization, founded in 1936, whose members include developers, investors, planners, architects and public officials working in real estate and land use.
For parking professionals, ULI is best known for Shared Parking, now in its third edition, the standard method for estimating parking demand in mixed-use developments by modeling each use’s demand by hour and season. ULI also publishes research on parking reform, adaptive reuse of garages and mobility.
Why it matters
- The shared parking method is widely accepted by cities as the basis for reducing parking in mixed-use projects.
- ULI’s convenings and publications are where much of the development industry’s thinking about parking and mobility is shared.
The Parkonomics view
ULI’s shared parking work did more than any code change to show that mixed-use places need far less parking than the sum of their parts. It remains the method to cite when asking a city to approve less.
