GBCI is the certification body that reviews projects and issues credentials for LEED, Parksmart and several other rating systems. Program list abbreviated.

GBCI was established alongside the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC): USGBC develops programs such as LEED, and GBCI reviews projects and issues certifications and credentials. For parking, the program that matters most is Parksmart, the rating system built specifically for parking structures.

Programs GBCI certifies

  • LEED for buildings. See LEED.
  • Parksmart for parking structures.
  • WELL, SITES and TRUE, among others, for health, landscapes and zero waste.

Why it matters for parking

  • Parksmart certification gives owners a recognized way to document sustainable design, operations and mobility programs.
  • Professional credentials, such as Parksmart Advisor, signal trained practitioners.

The Parkonomics view

GBCI is the referee, not the rule book. For a parking owner, the useful question is which program fits the asset, and for most structures that answer is Parksmart.
