Pay-by-plate is a parking payment method in which the driver enters the vehicle’s license plate number at a pay station, app or web page, and the payment is linked to that plate rather than to a space number or a printed receipt.
Because the plate is the credential, there is nothing to display on the dashboard and no need to number every space. Enforcement uses license plate recognition or handheld devices to check plates against paid sessions. Pay-by-plate is the foundation of gateless parking in lots and garages.
Advantages
- No receipts to display and no walk back to the car.
- Sessions can be extended from a phone.
- Works in lots without marked spaces and on streets without space numbers.
What to watch for
- Typing errors. Mistyped plates lead to wrongful citations; good systems suggest likely matches and allow easy appeals.
- Plate fraud. Fake, covered or cloned plates defeat the system. See LPR.
- Privacy. Plate data should have clear retention and access rules.
The Parkonomics view
Pay-by-plate makes the car its own ticket. That is efficient, but it puts all the weight on a plate that is easy to mistype and, increasingly, easy to fake.
