Tower Parking System

A tower parking system is a fully automated parking system in which a central lift carries each car vertically to storage bays stacked on one or both sides of the lift shaft, so a footprint about the size of two or three parking spaces can hold dozens of cars.

SECTION THROUGH A TOWER SYSTEMENTRY AT THE BASE OF THE LIFT SHAFTlift rises, slides carinto a bay
A single lift runs up a central shaft and transfers each car sideways into a bay on either side. Very small footprint; one lift is also one point of failure. Illustrative.

The driver leaves the car in an entry bay at grade, often on a turntable. The lift carries the car up and transfers it sideways into an open bay. Retrieval runs the same sequence in reverse. Because there is one vertical path, the lift is the whole system: every car in and out passes through it.

How it works

  • Entry. The driver stops in a transfer bay, the system checks the car fits, and the driver leaves.
  • Vertical travel. A lift, usually with a transfer mechanism, carries the car to an assigned level.
  • Storage. The car is moved sideways into a bay on the left or right of the shaft.
  • Return. On request, the lift collects the car and brings it to the exit position, often rotated to face out.

Where it fits

  • Very small urban lots and building cores where nothing else will fit.
  • Buildings with modest, spread out demand, such as residential towers and hotels with valet support.
  • Sites where a slender, tall structure is easier to approve than a wide one.

What to watch

  • One lift, one queue. Throughput is limited to what a single lift can cycle. Two towers side by side are often better than one tall one. See APS throughput.
  • Height adds time. Every level added extends average travel and retrieval time.
  • Redundancy. If the only lift is down for service, no cars come out. Ask how the system is evacuated in a power or equipment failure.

The Parkonomics view

A car tower is a vertical answer to a land problem. It earns its keep on lots too small for anything else, but the owner is buying a single machine with a single queue. Size it for the busiest quarter hour, and price the service contract with the same care as the steel.
