Signage and Environmental Graphics

A parking sign has one job and a fraction of a second to do it: deliver a message to a moving reader at a decision point. Everything in signage practice descends from that constraint, and the manuscript's specification set is unusually concrete, which makes this module the corpus's working style guide for the sign schedule.

Placement doctrine. Signs belong at and in advance of decision points, and almost nowhere else: excess signage between decisions distracts and dilutes. Locating a sign means reading the setting first (light levels, ceiling heights, aisle widths, obstructions), and the failure catalog is long and familiar: missing directional signs, unclear level and aisle identification (the single largest cause of the lost-car ritual), inconsistent fonts and colors across similar signs, non-standard symbols, absent safety and clearance-height warnings, thin accessibility signage, outdated rates and hours, faded faces nobody maintains, and missing availability indicators that condemn drivers to hunt. The remedy is a system, designed once and maintained: consistent design language, regular assessment, and user feedback closing the loop.

Readability rules. Readability is the message's quality; the manuscript's rules are blunt: maximum three words, single-line messages, one message per traffic sign, pictographs where they carry the load. Type is sans serif in upper and lower case, from a short approved family (Universe and Universe Condensed, Arial, Helvetica Medium, Futura in its weights, with a few serviceable serif alternates for identity work).

Legibility rules. Legibility is the letterform's quality, and it is arithmetic. Letter height scales to the structural system because the structural system sets the ceiling: 10-inch signs with 5-inch letters in a precast garage; 12-inch signs with 6-inch letters in a post-tensioned garage, the deeper coffers of precast forcing the smaller sign. Negative space is specified, not felt: message separation at twice the letter height, margins at half of it, word-to-symbol spacing at half of it. Contrast is a formula: 100(Rmax−Rmin)/Rmax with 70 percent the minimum acceptable, satisfied in practice by white copy on red, purple, dark blue, dark gray, green, or brown grounds, and black copy on white, yellow, light gray, orange, or beige.

Materials and mounting. The standard assembly: 0.080-inch aluminum plate or Sintra backgrounds carrying 3M adhesive reflective sheeting, bordered to strengthen shape recognition, with minimum 1 footcandle ambient light at the sign face. Mounting fights the structure and the light: ceiling-mount rather than beam-mount, placed at the far side of the beam coffer from the direction of travel so the beam does not eclipse the message; never directly behind a light fixture; flat paint behind signs, not semi-gloss; and internal illumination for any sign silhouetted against perimeter wall openings, where daylight would otherwise turn it into shadow. Where the 1-footcandle ambient level cannot be met at overhead mounting heights (7 to 8 feet), the fallback is a 75 percent reflectance difference between copy and background, or illuminated signs; the lighting modules carry the ambient side of the bargain.

VERDICT

run the sign schedule as specification, not decoration: three words, one line, sans serif, letter heights set by the structural system, contrast at 70 percent by formula, reflective sheeting on aluminum, ceiling-mounted at the far coffer, one footcandle on the face. Then put every sign at a decision point and delete every sign that is not, because the strongest signage system is the one the architecture almost made unnecessary.
